A crisis is approaching which will impact our society in ways unprecedented
in human history. No, I am not predicting future doom and gloom, but rather referring to the time when the Baby Boomers hit retirement age.
The impact of this event will be momentous and the sooner we, as a nation, face the issues involved, the better prepared we will be to
grapple with the far-reaching consequences...
Regardless of the outcome of any military action undertaken by our government,
the fact is, the largest army in 21st Century America will be composed of caregivers. As it is, there are already over 50 million of us
are caring for family members, friends or even strangers, saving the health care system billions of dollars annually. The Caring Advocate,
was founded to provide inspiration, support and fellowship for all caregivers.
I am the only child of a mother who is a breast cancer survivor as well as having a progressive neurological disorder,
and I have also been the director of an
elder daycare program, so I am familiar with what families experience when their loved ones require extra care. I believe that because of my
vantage point, from these two perspectives, (personal, as well as professional), I am able to cull the most pertinent and timely information for The
Caring Advocate, and thus am able to provide meaningful and useful information to all caregivers, not just those who care for seniors. It just so
happens that more families care for elders than any other group, but I am also interested in addressing issues that affect families with physically disabled
or mentally impaired members.
TCA covers not only the personal aspects of caregiving, but also features pertinent and timely information
about helpful resources, public policy, financial considerations, aging gays and lesbians, the spirituality of aging, as well as cultural
and ethnic issues. I also welcome questions from my readers as well. I bring over ten years experience in the social services with me. In addition to my work with elders, I have worked with victims of domestic violence,
have coordinated recreational programs for persons with disabilities, and was the director of our area's annual Special Olympics Track and Field
Event. I have also recruited and trained volunteers for a variety of local non-profit agencies and organizations, and I proudly hold the following professional affiliations:
My desire is that these generous human beings, caregivers, both family/informal, as well as the paid professionals,
and the people who support them, will come to think of The Caring Advocate as a valuable resource in their heroic efforts which so often go unrecognized by society. According to the US Census Bureau, today one person in four is a family
caregiver, but by the year 2030, that ratio will be one to one. The time to prepare ourselves is now.
Yours in the journey,
~Valerie Noelle-Cole~
